NFL Sunday Week 10
This Sunday was a great
football week in the NFL full of surprise results. In other games there were
blowouts that spoke more about the losing teams than it did against the winning
teams. One game that resembles all of that is one that wasn't played on Sunday
but on Thursday. The Cleveland Browns beat the Cincinnati Bengals 24-3 in their
own stadium. We knew the Browns were a very improved team with a good defense
but this game showed how they outplayed the Bengals in all aspects of the game.
It also shows how bad the Bengals have been in all 3 of their losses losing to
New England 43-17, Indianapolis Colts 27-0, and now the Browns. The good news
is that they are still in the playoff hunt and the bad news is if the season
ended today all 3 teams they have lost to are also in the playoff hunt. If they
avoid those teams it doesn't get any easier with the Chiefs and Broncos in the
AFC. The other game not played this Sunday is the Carolina Panthers vs. the
Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football. Now before talking about Sunday's
week 10 NFL games first let’s talk about some noticeable injuries incurred on
Sunday.
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer injured his knee in what is being
predicted as a torn ACL that would rule him out for the rest of the season.
Tennessee Titans tight end Delanie Walker was carted off the field with a
concussion. The Miami Dolphins left tackle Branden Albert and cornerback
Cortland Finnegan both left the game. Branden Albert injury is being ruled as
an ACL and MLC tear while Finnegan suffered an ankle injury. Another noticeable
injury was Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall injuring his ankle
and not returning to the game. Now that I mentioned some of the injuries this
Sunday, let's get to our week 10 summary of all games played.
The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Buffalo Bills 17-13 in a great defensive game from both sides. This is a game the Bills let go by allowing 14 points in the 4th quarter. The Bills were on top for 3 quarters of the game with a 13-3 lead but allowed 2 rushing touchdowns in the 4th quarter with 1 a piece by Jamaal Charles and Alex Smith. The Bills showed how great they are defensively and that they can play with the elite teams but still need to find a way to close out games. The Chiefs well they showed how great they are in squeezing out a win in a close game and that's what playoff teams do.
In London the Dallas
Cowboys beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 31-17 in an early blowout leading for 3
quarters with a score of 31-7. The closest the Jaguars got in this game was in
the 1st quarter trailing 10-7 then any chance of them winning was over after
that. This game showed how bad the Jaguars are and how good the Cowboys can be.
The Cowboys played 1 of their best overall game so far with QB Tony Romo
throwing for 246 yards and 3 touchdowns with a passer rating of 138. RB DeMarco
Murray rushed for 100 yards with 19 carries. WR Dez Bryant had 6 receptions for
158 yards with 2 touchdowns and TE Jason Witten had 5 receptions for 33 yards
with 1 touchdown. Also 2nd year RB Joseph Randle got in the scoring parade with
7 carries for 56 yards with 1 touchdown. What a great day for London fans.
The San Francisco 49ers beat the New Orleans Saints in their stadium in an
overtime victory 27-24. In the first half everything looked good for the 49ers
with a 21-10 lead and overall they played better than the Saints.
Unfortunately, defensively the Saints allowed only 1 field goal in the 2nd half
while the 49ers allowed a touchdown in the 3rd and 4th quarter. This led to a
24-24 game that was sent to overtime. In overtime Saints QB Drew Brees was
stripped of the football that allowed a 35 yard field goal from 49ers K Phil
Dawson to help them win the game. This game helped the 49ers (5-4) save their
season while the Saints (4-5) struggles still continues but being in top of
their division does help.
The Baltimore Ravens beat the Tennessee Titans 21-7 in a good defensive game
that was tied 7-7 in the first half. Then the Ravens managed to score a
touchdown in the 3rd and 4th quarter to seal the win. This is one of those
games where the score is actually closer than it looks. The Ravens weren't
really doing great offensively but their defense only allowed a 1st quarter
touchdown. This show how bad offensively the Titans are and how great defensively
the Ravens are.
The New York Jets surprised the Pittsburgh Steelers with a 20-13 victory.
Unlike the Ravens and Titans game this one really feels more like a rout than a
1 score victory by the Jets. For 3 quarters the Jets lead 20-3 before allowing
10 points in the 4th quarter while scoring none. This game said more of how
great the Jets played than it did about how bad the Steelers played. It's not
always that we see a Jets player having 2 interceptions, a sack and a fumble
recovery like Free Safety Jaiquawn Jarret had. The Jets rushing defense was
superb while their secondary only allowed an 80 yard touchdown pass by Steelers
QB Ben Roethlisberger in the final minute of the game with 1:16 left to play.
The Atlanta Falcons won 27-17 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a game with 2
teams with losing records. The Buccaneers early in the 4th quarter were up
17-16 but couldn't make the necessary stops to win the game. The Falcons QB
Matt Ryan got a touchdown pass to WR Roddy White and a 2 point conversion to go
up 24-17. Then a field goal to seal the victory. This was a good game by
the Buccaneers but offensively the Falcons were too much.
The Denver Broncos beat the winless Oakland Raiders 41-17. Now this was a rout
where an elite team faced a very bad team. Judging from the 1st quarter we
actually had a game with both teams tied 3-3. But then again this is Peyton
Manning going up against the Raiders. He had 340 passing yards 5 touchdowns
what more can you ask of him. In the half the score was Broncos up 20-10 and by
the end of the 3rd quarter it was 41-10. So what did we learn from this
game? well there wasn't much that we didn't know already. There's one
thing though and that is that Denver has another offensive weapon in RB C.J
Anderson who had 13 carries for 90 yards and 4 receptions for 73 yards with 1
touchdown.
The Arizona Cardinals won at home 31-14 versus the St. Louis Rams. The Rams
were ahead in the first half 14-10 but then were shut down in the 2nd half.
Through 3 quarters of the game they maintained their lead 14-10 because
both teams failed to score in the 3rd quarter. In the meantime the Cardinals
exploded in the 4th quarter to score 21 points and take the lead for good. The
St. Louis Rams showed that if any team sleeps on them they will beat them just
like they beat the Seahawks and 49ers. Unfortunately for them after the 2nd
half the Cardinals did wake up and showed us why they are so good at home as
well as one of the best defensive teams in the league.
The Seattle Seahawks beat the NY Giants 38-17 while outscoring them in the 2nd
half 24-0. The Giants allowed Seattle's running game to take control of this
game while allowing Seattle's RB Marshawn Lynch to rush for 140 yards and 4
touchdowns. The Giants did have the lead in the first half 17-14 and were tied
through 3 quarters 17-17. This is one of those wins where it allows us to see
the negatives from each team. The Seahawks blowout win only showed how the
Giants aren't playing a complete football game. They compete for 1 half and then
slowly disappear. If they made the right stops in the 4th quarter they could
have actually won this game. What I saw wrong with the Seahawks is that they
aren't always going to get such a performance from Lynch to bail them out. In
the first half their secondary was allowing the Giants to make plays and all of
this is in their home stadium. This Seahawks team is allowing opponents to
score on them at home at a much higher rate than last year. Thus giving the
opponent a chance to beat them in what is supposed to be their advantage over
every team. Last year at home opponents averaged 13.8 points while this year
they are averaging 21.8.
The last game played on Sunday was won by the Green Bay Packers in a rout of
the Chicago Bears 55-14. Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers threw for 315 yards and 6
touchdowns with a least a touchdown pass to 5 different players. Packers WR
Jordy Nelson had 6 receptions for 152 yards and 2 touchdowns. This game
showed how good the Packers are and how bad the Bears are. The Packers played
great defensively intercepting Bear QB Jay Cutler twice and offensively they
were a juggernaut scoring 55 points. The Bears defensively were horrible
allowing at least 50 points for the 2nd straight week. On paper this is
supposed to be a good offensive team with Cutler, RB Matt Forte, TE Martellus
Bennett, Wide Receivers Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery. So scoring 14
points all in the 2nd half generally in garbage time is horrible especially
when you’re down 42-0 in the first half.
