Here is a quick summary of everything that happened in week 16.  I have the winners and losers of the week. Who clinch a playoff spot and who didn’t? Which teams are still alive in the playoff hunt? I got you covered. So let’s start with Thursday’s games all the way to Monday’s Night Football game between the Denver Broncos and the Cincinnati Bengals.

Tennessee Titans 13 Jacksonville Jaguars 21

Two bad teams in the bottom of the AFC South already eliminated from playoff contention. It is one of those games where the loser is actually the winner. Since the Titans lost they hold the No. 1 draft pick while the Jaguars win could work against them.

Philadelphia Eagles 24 Washington Redskins 27

The Eagles ruined their playoff chances with an awful 3rd quarter that saw them being outscored 14-0 by the Redskins. While the Redskins played for pride it did help
QB Robert Griffin III who played a great game. This game was on Saturday so as we know the Cowboys won on Sunday therefore eliminating the Eagles from playoff contention.

San Diego Chargers 38 San Francisco 49ers 35

The 49ers could have ruined the Chargers playoff hopes but instead they came out as the losing team. The Chargers after being down in the first half 28-7 made a tremendous comeback to outscore the 49ers in the second half 28-7. This send both team to overtime and the Chargers won it on a Nick Novak field goal. San Diego is still alive and can clinch with a win against the Kansas City Chiefs, OR a tie and a Baltimore Ravens loss or tie. So they definitely control their playoff destiny.

Baltimore Ravens 13 Houston Texans 25

The Texans kept their playoff hopes alive with a big win against the Ravens. They did all of this while having 3 quarterbacks hurt and needing to start QB Case Keenum. The Ravens made their playoff hopes much more difficult by trailing 16-0 in the first half and never rebounding from it. Baltimore clinches a spot with a win and Chargers loss or tie, OR with a tie and Chargers loss. The Texans in the other hand can clinch with a win and a Baltimore loss and a Chargers loss.

Green Bay Packers 20 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 3

This game is actually a win for both teams. The Packers clinched a playoff spot and Tampa Bay is closer to getting 1 of the top 3 draft pick spots. Nothing new here QB Aaron Rodgers threw for 318 yards with 1 touchdown pass, Eddie Lacy rushed for 99 yards and 1 touchdown, and Jordy Nelson had 9 receptions for 113 yards with 1 touchdown scored.  Green Bay still has a lot to play for because it can clinch the NFC North with a win against the Detroit Lions. It can also clinch home field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs with a win and a Seattle Seahawks loss or tie.

Kansas City Chiefs 12 Pittsburgh Steelers 20

A great defensive game by both teams in the end QB Alex Smith getting sacked 6 times wasn’t going to help his team win the game. QB Ben Roethlisberger had a great game and his 2 best offensive weapons, RB Le’Veon Bell and WR Antonio Brown, both scored a touchdown. This helped the Steelers clinch a playoff spot while the Chiefs are on the outside looking in. The Steelers can also win the AFC North with a win against the Cincinnati Bengals. The Chiefs can clinch a spot with a win against the Chargers and a Baltimore loss and a Houston loss.

Cleveland Browns 13 Carolina Panthers 17

Just like the Chiefs and Steelers this was another great defensive match. The Browns playing for pride and the Panthers to stay alive in the playoff hunt. Things didn’t start good for the Browns not only were they trailing in the first half but their QB Johnny Manziel hurt his hamstring and didn’t return with a little under 2 minutes in the 2nd quarter.  The Panthers win allows them to clinch a playoff spot and the NFC South with a win or tie against the Atlanta Falcons.

Detroit Lions 20 Chicago Bears 14

Everything seems to go bad for the Bears these days. The losses are piling up, eliminated from playoff contention, and now QB Jimmy Clausen starting over QB Jay Cutler.  The Lions managed to win with their 2 running backs, Joique Bell and Reggie Bush, each scoring a touchdown. This and Philadelphia’s loss helped them clinch a playoff spot. The Lions can clinch the NFC North with a win or tie over the Packers. It can also clinch a first round bye with a win, OR tie and Dallas loss or tie, OR tie and Seattle loss and Arizona Cardinals loss. Matter of fact they can also clinch home field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs with a win and Seattle loss or tie and Arizona loss or tie, OR tie and Seattle loss and Arizona loss and Dallas loss or tie.

Minnesota Vikings 35 Miami Dolphins 37

Two good defensive teams eliminated from playoff contention played at it in a great scoring affair by both sides. In the end the Dolphins defense made the right stops to come out with the win.  Viking rookie QB Teddy Bridgewater continues to improve and Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill had a phenomenal game with 4 passing touchdowns and 396 yards.

Atlanta Falcons 30 New Orleans Saints 14

In a game where the winner would eliminate the opposing team the Saints did little to come out victorious. If this was in another time when the Saints were as close as automatic when playing at home then they could have been in playoff contention. But these days they are no longer protected by their home field anybody can come here and get a win. The Falcons had their ups and down in the season with their shaky defense but manage to put the offensive numbers that they are capable of producing in a weekly basis. The Falcons can clinch a playoff spot and win the NFC South with a win against the Panthers.

New England Patriots 17 New York Jets 16

Two rivals going at it with the Patriots having Super Bowl aspirations and the Jets hoping to hurt the Patriots playoff seeding with a win. The game started and ended with both teams playing great defense but the Patriots made the right plays to increase the Jets loss total. The Jets had a chance to take the lead with a Nick Folk’s 52 yard field goal that was missed. This moves the Jets closer to a top 5 draft pick. The win gave the Patriots a first round bye and with Denver Broncos Monday Night loss it gave the Patriots home field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs.

New York Giants 37 St. Louis Rams 27

The Giants needed this win while the Rams defense took a downturn. QB Eli Manning threw 3 touchdown passes and WR Odell Beckham Jr. caught 2 touchdown passes along with 8 receptions for 148 yards. Rams QB Shaun Hill threw for 2 touchdowns and 290 yards and RB Tre Mason rushed for 1 touchdown and 76 yards.

Indianapolis Colts 7 Dallas Cowboys 42

The Cowboys ran over the Colts in a blowout victory. Dallas QB Tony Romo passed for 218 yards 4 touchdowns and completed 18 pass out of 20 to have one of his best games ever. RB DeMarco Murray ran for a touchdown and WR Dez Bryant also scored a touchdown. The win clinched them a playoff spot and the NFC East crown. The Colts loss was so lopsided probably because they didn’t have much reason to play since they already had clinched the AFC South. The Cowboys can clinch home field advantage throughout the NFC with a win and Arizona loss or tie and Detroit vs. Green Bay tie. They also have 4 different possibilities to earn a first round bye.

Buffalo Bills 24 Oakland Raiders 26

The Bills couldn’t beat a Raiders team that came in with a 2-12 record. The Raiders win helped play spoiler and knock the Bills out of the playoff hunt. It also helps when they weren’t scoring touchdowns they were kicking field goals (4). The Bills can now play for pride and the Raiders should actually try to lose their next game and get a high draft pick.

Seattle Seahawks 35 Arizona Cardinals 6

The Seahawks dominated the Cardinals with their dominant defense. In their last matchup the Seahawks held the Cardinals to 3 points and now to 6 points. This allows them to tie the Cardinals with an 11-4 record and take first place in the NFC West via tiebreaker. Either team can still win the division as long as one wins and the other one loses. Both teams already clinched a playoff berth but there’s better playoff positioning for both. The Cardinals can clinch a first round bye and the NFC West with a win and a Seattle loss or tie. There are other scenarios that can help them achieve a first round bye or even home field advantage throughout the playoffs but it starts mostly with a Seattle loss. The Seahawks can win the NFC West and a first round bye with just a win. They also have it much easier to clinch home field advantage throughout the playoffs and it starts with getting a win in week 17.

Denver Broncos 28 Cincinnati Bengals 37

The Bengals needed a win to clinch a playoff berth and they got it. The Broncos already clinched and had a chance to clinch a first round bye and lost.  The Bengals rattled QB Peyton Manning and took a 20-7 first half lead. Then in the 3rd quarter Manning tried to bring the team back as they ended the quarter with a 28-27 lead by scoring 21 points in that frame.  The Bengals then outscored the Broncos 10-0 in the 4th quarter to win the game. Now the Bengals have a chance to win the NFC North with a win or tie against the Steelers. They can also clinch a first round bye with a win and Denver loss or tie, OR with a tie and Denver loss and Indianapolis loss or tie. The Broncos still have a chance to clinch a first round bye with a win or tie, OR Cincinnati loss, OR Cincinnati tie and Indianapolis win.

Stay tuned to week 17 to see how it all ends up. I’ll still be here to give you a summary of it. Any questions or comments just reply in the comment box. Have a great Christmas everyone!
