The Japanese introduced the basic
idea of position or ranks of any karate-ka based on his or her karate belt's
colour during the 20th century. Every belt signifies a succession in
competence, but most importantly a change in attitude. Nowadays there are
several different ranks in numerous systems worldwide. In Kenpo FreeStyle for
example, the belt progression is as follows, with their meanings explained.
